Teachers unions are not averse to a little propaganda when it suits them, but if the union movement wants to achieve lasting change in the education sector, it has to do a better job of communicating with students.
It’s a challenge that comes with the new president of the American Federation of Teachers, Jack Dorsey, and his plan to use the platform of his new position to take a hard look at the profession.
In his first speech at the annual American Federation for Teachers convention in Denver, Dorsey will offer a new direction for the union and his group of teachers unions.
“The teachers union is not a ‘movement of the masses,'” he said, “it’s not a movement of teachers or students, it’s a movement for teachers.”
The new union leader is also expected to unveil a plan to create a national teacher credentialing program, which would be the most expansive union-certification initiative in American history.
“If we can do this and have a lot of great ideas for improving education in the classroom and across the board, I think it’s something that we can be proud of,” Dorsey said.

But the American teachers union has long resisted new organizing and has been wary of the national-level approach that Dorsey is seeking.
Dorsey announced plans in January for the federation to begin its annual national convention in July in Orlando, Fla.
and he said that his group is considering opening a convention in Chicago.
“We’ve always said, if we want to do well, we’ve got to do it locally,” Dorseys said.
He also announced plans for the first national training conference for teachers, and he wants the federation’s leadership to create an advisory board to advise the union on the development of its education policies.
“That way, we can say, ‘Here’s what we’re trying to do,'” Dorsey told the audience at the convention, adding that he is “not going to tell you what to think.
We’re going to try to make the best decision for you, and I don’t want you to feel like you have to tell us what to make.”
As for his new role, Dorson is set to spend the next three years running the federation.
His first move as president is to work with members of the National Governors Association, a group that represents governors across the country, to create training materials that are tailored to the needs of their states.
Dorsey said he expects to have more than 100,000 copies of the training materials ready by the time the national convention is set for July.
“You can’t go around making training materials, because there’s no national training.
It just doesn’t work,” Dorson said.
Dorson has also been working to recruit more young teachers.
“One of the great challenges of this profession is that a lot more young people have no idea what a teacher is,” he said.
At the conference, he also outlined a plan for more transparency in union dues and compensation.
“In order to really have the most effective union in the world, we’re going have to take some tough measures to ensure that when we collect a percentage of the dues, we are giving it to the people that have actually contributed the most,” Dorresey said, adding, “I want to make sure that we’re not doing things that are hurting people who have not contributed the greatest amount.”
He also said that the federation will launch a new website, which is designed to make it easier for teachers to find out where their money goes.
“What we’re saying is, ‘I want you guys to be able to know who’s making your money, where that money goes,’ ” Dorsey added.
The new leadership will also work to improve student support services, including the use of technology and social media to improve access to information for students.
Dorries plan also calls for a new federal program to help teachers who want to stay with their union, and the federation plans to introduce a new union charter amendment.
Dorry said that a number of changes are planned to help the union become a stronger organization.
He plans to have a new membership council, which he said will be elected by members of teachers.
He will also hire hundreds of new staff members, who will be paid a higher salary than other members.
Dorsons plans to bring in new members, with a focus on minority and female teachers, Dorreys said, to help ensure the union has more representation.
“When you have a group of people who are doing this work and doing it well, it creates an environment that is very conducive to growth,” Dorrey said.
